7 Ways to Decorate your Bookshelf
Posted by Unknown
Books! You never go to bed
without them and you can almost hear them speak to you when you are alone. They
are your loyal friends and you have them lying around practically all over the
house, more so than in the bookshelf! Don’t you think you should do justice to
the paradise that is your bookshelf? No, you don’t have to call your interior
designer for help, nor your architect to build you one. Here are seven simple
yet functional ideas to decorate your bookshelf. It’s time to take things in
your own hands and have some fun in the process!
1. Colour – co-ordinate your
books
Use the colourful spines of books
to your creative advantage. Arrange books of similar colours together to make a
colourful bookshelf. This will reflect best when the interiors of your
bookshelf are painted with gentle pastels like beige, white or yellow. You may
even go the extra step to create a gradient effect by strategically arranging
the books so the colours can fade and intensify!
2. Paint the interiors of your bookshelf with a colour that
contrasts with the room
It’s a simple idea but has proven
to be the most effective and popular by far. Choose bright colours like red,
orange, yellow or blue to paint the interiors of your bookshelf. The bookshelf
will stand out in your room, giving it the required attention.
3. Bookshelves need not be all
about books
Who said bookshelves are all
about books? Bring a touch of ingenuity to your bookshelf by striking a clear
balance between books and decorative objects such as photo frames, flower
vases, cushions or anything that inspires you. Think out of the box and make
your bookshelf look a piece of beauty!
4. Stack your books to create a
variety
Diversify and organise your
bookshelf by simply alternating the book arrangement. You can stack them
horizontally or make them lean them against the wall. This will not only create
a trendy look, but also break the otherwise monotonous tone.
5. Use attractive wallpapers for
the interiors of the shelf
Using wallpapers, you can make
your bookshelf look anything from metallic to ethnic to funky to glossy. They
can tell a story or they can just speak of impeccable taste. Wallpapers breathe
life into your bookshelf when you use bold prints and patterns. There are
plenty of designs available online to choose from.
6. Use creative bookends
Do you have flower vases, ceramic
figurines, souvenirs, photographs or plain toys that deserve to be showcased?
They are your ideal bookends. Trade them for the traditional ‘L’ bookends and
give a new definition to your bookshelf.
7. Lighten up your bookshelf
If you don’t have reading lights
to brighten up your bookshelf, don’t worry. Use small table lamps, magma stone
candles or serial lights. They cost you practically nothing and are
showstoppers in your bookshelf. If you’re using candles, take precautions and
place them at a distance from the books or use candle domes.

Love this post, I happen to already have tried the first four on my bookshelf - the strict colour coordination has begun to lapse of late, because of the library books that keep changing, but the interior of my shelf is yellow and cuts a great square in the chalky white wall, I keep the larger books in stacks and have a few photo frame and collectibles on the shelf too. The rest of your suggestions are going on my bucket list! :)
